Seti I Dondi George
Matt W. Brown
August 3 – 30

(Halifax) – Emerging artist Matt W. Brown exhibits a series of his recent drawings created using chalk pastel, watercolor, and oil bar. These small works on display, each a collage-like group of images, are a response to a number of his recent image groupings. His colourful exhibition Seti I Dondi George is on view in the Corridor Gallery August 3 – 30, 2016.

Describing the work on view, Brown explains:

Recently I have been exploring a method of synthesizing groups of images. While this approach could be considered an offshoot of collage, it is not collage in the traditional sense. I have found that by using combinations of printed images as my ‘still lives’, sometimes chosen casually and sometimes carefully selected, I have been able to engage with the transcendental nature of images as they are experienced through memory and observed presently.

Matt W. Brown was born in London, Ontario in 1988. He has a strong background in music, literature, biblical studies, and fine arts. Having attended and graduated from NSCAD University in 2014, he has since been involved in two artist residencies, one of which is a self-directed residency with Kings Wharf in Dartmouth that will be completed later this year. Currently residing in Dartmouth, Brown continues to be deeply engrossed in his passion for image making and is perpetually captivated by the naturally occurring union between image, music, poetry and spirituality that he finds in his work.

Located inside the Visual Arts Nova Scotia office at the Halifax Seaport since 2000, the Corridor Gallery is complimented by a historical legacy of Nova Scotia culture, simple yet modern architectural elements and an array of current cultural activity in the Cultural Federations of Nova Scotia office. The Corridor Gallery is located at 1113 Marginal Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia and is open Monday through Friday, 9:30am-5pm.

ViewPoint Gallery’s August exhibition : EVANESCENT by Lynn Ellis

ViewPoint Gallery August 2016 exhibition

Evanescent

a member solo show by Lynn Ellis

Evanescent (2 of 2) titled

Exhibition running:  August 4 to 26
Opening reception:
Thursday August 4, 6-8pm
Artist talk:
Sunday August 14, 2pm

This landscape exhibition is an exploration of the South Shore of Nova Scotia to create images that mirror the idea of evanescence.

The landscape for me is a bridge between the deepest parts of my spirit and the outer temporal world. This intersection is of great interest to me. The mists, drops of water, wet surfaces all reflect a transient evanescence. This creates a vulnerably of the scene, it’s breathtaking beauty, but it’s also temporary and the scene may disappear and transform at any moment.

I believe this concept mirrors the vulnerability and transience of our lives, we are not the same today as we were yesterday and we will all change again tomorrow. It is for us to take in the beauty of today, to live in the moment and to be aware of its evanescence.
