Main & Station Opening Exhibition “The Nonesuch Art On Paper Awards” August 20
Main & Station Presents The Nonesuch Art On Paper Awards
Main & Station Ltd, an art residency centre located at 168 Main Street in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, will be hosting a major International art award and exhibition. Between August 20th and September 10th 2016.
Main and Station Ltd-Nonesuch art centre is housed in the newly repurposed 1913 4-story heritage building that once was home to the town’s post office and custom’s house. We will be hosting an exhibition that will show the many ways of creating art on or with paper. The exhibit will then move to Montreal for another three week period in late September.
The exhibition is the result of a new award created by Main and Station Ltd, “The Nonesuch Art On Paper Awards”. These awards have a value of approximately $20,000 . The Awards comprise 5 individual awards and include an award for sculptural work as well as a People’s Choice award. The awards consist of Art Residency and an honourarium
The awards attracted submissions from 17 different countries, including Argentina, Australia, Estonia, France, Italy, Germany, Israel, Japan and Spain. Over 35 submissions to the awards came from artists living in the Maritime Provinces.
Over 70 works of art will be on exhibit, including drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, paper-crochet hangings, origami, photography, collage and hand-made books. With over 200 artworks entered in the submissions, choosing only 70 works of art for the exhibition was difficult. The quality of work is exceptionally high and the manner of how paper is used in the creative process is extraordinary.
The awards are a privately sponsored initiative to support the arts and no federal, provincial or municipal government assistance was provided.
The awards are financed by Main & Station Ltd of Parrsboro, Purple Chips/ 7790139 Canada Inc (financial advisors) of Montreal., The Lev Group of companies of Montreal and Parrsboro, Judith S Bauer, Jane Zdansky and John Schwinghamer

Exhibition opening Friday, July 29 at 6pm – Joy Laking
Opening This Week
Friday, July 29. 6-pm
Joy Snihur Wyatt Laking
Joy Laking is a Nova Scotian artist living and working in Portapique, NS.
Artist’s Statement
Joy loves to paint. For forty-four years she has painted Nova Scotia and captured her view of the world on watercolour paper and in oil and acrylics. She is inspired by all of the beauty that is Nova Scotia
Joy’s studio paintings are developed from on location paintings, photos and actual objects and flowers. Sometimes an idea is thought about for a number of years before a painting is started. The actual painting may take several weeks. In all cases the reality in the painting is Joy’s. She happily changes or moves objects within a painting. Strong compositions and a wide range of tonal values are a constant in all of Joy’s paintings. Her watercolours make full use of the white of the paper and her oils and acrylics are full of rich colours. All of Joy’s paintings “sing”.
In addition to her studio paintings and when ever possible Joy paints on location. It is an exhilarating challenge to set out, find a subject and complete an entire painting in four to seven hours. These paintings are loose, spontaneous and depict the tides, the lighting and the moment. Besides painting on location throughout the Maritimes, Joy loves the landscape and history of England, Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Japan and all of South America. In 2016, Joy painted in Ghana, Africa.

Exhibitions in the Gallery
Art Lab is proud to host a membership sponsored Community Gallery, a space where artists, both professional and amateur, have an opportunity to share their talent with the community.
Each exhibition will be mounted for two and a half weeks and openings of exhibits will usually be held on a Friday between 6 and 8 pm. These openings are an important time for the artists and for Art Lab. So we encourage you to drop in, meet the artists involved and show your support for the role that art plays in making our community such a great place to live.

Call to Artists: Paint the Deanery Project
Hi All my wonderfully creative fellow artists.
I am inviting you to the Deanery Project in Lower Ship Harbour on August 21, 2016 for the Launch of my 100 Wild Islands series in support of Nova Scotia Nature Trust.
I would also like to invite you to come plein aire painting that day in support of the Deanery Project. Find out more about the project at thedeaneryproject.com
There is no registration fee and you will receive 50 percent of all works sold. It is rain or shine but there are some wonderfully unique indoor spaces. On Saturday there is a meet and greet and tour at 3pm and pizza cooked in the outdoor oven.
My show will be up all weekend but the official opening is at 2pm on Sunday. Creating on Sunday will be from 10-3pm so I will hopefully get a few hours of painting in myself. Photographers are invited to shoot on Saturday or anytime between now and then so your images will be ready for sale.
Thanks and blessings to all
