The Garden Party is a six week course that explores different ways to enhance and manipulate fabric as the foundation layer for your Zen Stitching projects.

This is an introductory course where you will discover the magic of natural dyes, eco-printing, resist printing, block printing and mark making to decorate the surface of fabric prior to stitching.

Held over a series of six consecutive weeks, with recorded video lessons and downloadable pdf handouts. This means you have lifetime access to the information – so if you need to go back and refresh your memory you can.

This Saturday September 19th, 2-5pm ~ Take a 3-hour online workshop with Henry Tian

How to paint FAST and GOOD – a 3-hour online workshop with Henry Tian

Hello all! My name is Henry Tian and I am a professional oil painter working in the tradition of realism. I display at Art 1274 Hollis gallery. I am excited to offer an online workshop where I will show you how to simplify your subject so that you can capture the essence of the subject in a short amount of time. (The examples shown here – my son and the owl, were each painted in just 1.5 hours). Now, this is not about speed at all. It’s about developing your ability and skill to see the important visual elements that make up your subject and capture them with your paint. The speed and efficiency of how I paint is only a by-product of how I see and what I know. And I want to share that with you in this online workshop.

You will learn:

How to use your peripheral vision to get the gestalt of your subject before the details

How to see shapes abstractly instead of concretely

How to see the transition between any two shapes (a key for realism)

How to mix any color in the visual world with a basic 12-color palette

How to make your brushstrokes effective and interesting (no more aimless dabbing, I have been there…)

How to use the above knowledge in a painting

The structure and detail of the workshop is as follows:

3-hour online video session over Skype ( you can ask me questions live as I go)

First hour is a discussion of key concepts and techniques in oil painting

Second hour is a demo with commentaries

Third hour is finishing the demo and group discussion

When: Saturday September 19th, 2-5pm (video replay will be provided afterwards so you can watch it over and over again if needed)

Fee: $33 (e-transfer is the preferred method of payment)

Bonus: I will send you the real-time video of how I painted my son and the owl, each in 1.5 hours only, so you can watch every step of my process. You can even watch these videos before the workshop so you can ask specific questions during the actual workshop.

Please email me at henrytian.art@gmail.com to register! Thank you.

ENCORE! Paint the Glorious Colors of New England in Autumn – 3 day V.I.E.W

Virtual Interactive Escapade Workshops

(V.I.E.W.)

with French Escapade and Evelyn Dunphy

“Paint Live from your home with Evelyn and fellow artists”

Painting the Glorious Colors of New England in Autumn

October 5, 6, 7th

(an encore session)

12:00 noon – 3:00 – pm EDT

Three sessions 3 hours each

with follow up with Evelyn as wished

$249.00

To sign up, just go to “Book A V.I.E.W”

We have had such an enthusiastic response to the first workshop featuring the Autumn Colors of New England that a second workshop has been scheduled for the above dates.

Please notice that this is ten days earlier than the original one,  (in order to fit into my schedule) and if you are registered for the one on October 15,16 and 17th, I will see you then!

***********************************

I am really thrilled to be teaching this 3 day workshop where I’ll be able to show you the benefits of the unique way in which i stretch my watercolor paper, and have you enjoy this wonderful surface.

Very few artists do this; even Graeme Stevenson from the Australian art video company who films artists all around the world, was filled with questions when he saw my large prepared paper! You can see a little preview of it on the video link on my website:

A prepared sketch with some compositional changes will be sent to you after you sign up for the workshop.

Heres why I love this surface. (I’ll skip the preamble about how to do it, etc. as that will all be provided once you have registered for the class).

Our subject will give us several opportunities to appreciate the options that we have using this surface.

All of the techniques that we will be using may be used on 300# watercolor paper, so if you would like to take the workshop and prefer not to stretch your paper, you may use the 300# paper instead.

************************************************

Is there anything more beautiful than a day in autumn in New England! However, autumn colors can present the same problem as brilliant sunsets. So much color can become garish, resulting in the loss of the beauty of the scene.

We will mix complementary neutrals that create a subtle reaction, with accents of pure color that light up those neutrals and make your landscape come alive. Soft gray-mauves against yellow, yellow-greens next to pink and rose and bronze – and the deep browns and violets in the shadows. What an exercise in learning to use color effectively!

You will learn how to link receding planes in a landscape so that they flow seamlessly, and to paint a hundred trees without actually painting one!

This painting was done on stretched paper and it was a joy to paint. No rippling at all during multiple washes of warm and cool grays.

The Embrace
Private Collection

My goal is to help you realize your own potential; to be better able to express your personal esthetic, rather than to paint like me!

A short video showing how I stretch the paper will be sent to you along with written instructions so that you can prepare your paper before the workshop. It’s really so easy! I often stretch three of four large sheets in order to have them ready for a new painting.

If you are interested in this workshop, please register early as you will need to purchase wooden stretchers and have time for them to be delivered. I encourage you to check the supply list so that if there are one or two pigments that you do not have, you will have time to get them.

A sketch of the subject will be sent to you along with the supply list.

There will be time during the three days to practice the skills that are listed above, and especially for personal critiques with everyone.

I know I’ll be seeing some of you next week as we paint Twilight on the Coast of Maine. I hope you will return in October for our autumn celebration!

Remember, just go to “Book A V.I.E.W” to register for this new workshop.

Affectionately,

Evelyn

I am really pleased to share these comments from artists in an earlier workshop.

Evelyn is such a good teacher. Her classes are so perfectly paced, and she lets you know what she’s using each step along the way. Arlene T.

This was an excellent workshop: Evelyn Dunphy is such a calm, organized, & effective instructor. I greatly appreciated how she managed to keep everyone moving forward, yet allowed people to work at their own pace. In particular I appreciated & benefited from her frequent individualized feedback & critique during the sessions. Rosemary T.

Evelyn Dunphy’s work has been exhibited in juried exhibitions throughout the United States, Canada and the UK, including the Royal Watercolour Society’s Contemporary Art Exhibit, London, UK, American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club , New York, National Arts Club, New York, Adirondack Exhibition of American Watercolors, “Portraits, Interior And Exterior” , Arts Club of Washington, DC and toured with the International Guild of Realism’s Masterworks Museum Tour.

Two of Dunphy’s paintings were included among artists from 83 countries in the “World Watercolour Competition” sponsored by The Art of Watercolour magazine published in France. Her work was a finalist in the 2014 and 2015 Artist’s Magazine annual competition out of 6800 entries and is included in “2015, 2016 and 2017 “SPLASH” publication.

Remember, just go toBook A V.I.E.W” to register for this new workshop.
