‘Aspect and Light’ Artist Talk and Exhibition with Joshua Collins, May 6th at LSA

‘Aspect and Light’ Artist Talk and Exhibition with
Joshua Collins – Friday, May 6th at 7:30pm

LSA

Joshua Collins’ work as recent Artist in Resident at the Lunenberg School of the Arts will be on display for the month of May. There will be an opening and artist talk on May the 6th at 7:30pm. The talk will situate this work within his larger practice as an designer, builder and artist.

‘ASPECTS and LIGHT’ is a work that looks to locate and measure the range of dynamic lighting conditions within a micro-urban environment across the period of a day. It entails a series of photographs taken from Sunrise through Sunset at specific locations throughout Lunenburg. The photographs were shoot through hand-etched renditions of the scene to help abstract and bring attention to the role of architectural details and building form in expressing the daily lighting cycle.

ARTIST BIO:
Joshua Collins, formally trained as an architect, maintains an integrated practice ranging from construction to poetry, from process sketches to environmental studies, from installation art to education. His freelance work at an urban scale includes design and construction work on large-scale developments as well as rehabilitating the cultural capacity of both public and private spaces through constructive installations, interventions and commissions. At a rural scale, his work has ranged from contemplative covered bridges and substantial greenhouses to lighting installations within the natural landscape.

His practice maintains a fundamentally environmental focus; using the operative capacity of NOISE and lessons from acoustic ecology as an evocative method for gathering and processing the complexity of environmental conditions and establishing the basis for constructive abidance (or dwelling). He also maintains substantial emphasis on the role of LIGHT, relying both on the potency of its phenomena and on the sheer optimism and open-ended playfulness that it demands.

Light and Lightness is the ultimate quest underlying his practice.
Josh views ‘Art’ as a venue for expressing and developing these interests.
