Reminders from VANS…Mentorship Program deadline, VANS in Residence, Remote Probabilities exhibition, call for artwork/ pitches and more

Apply for VANS in Residence in New Glasgow!

VANS, in partnership with The Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library and the Town of New Glasgow, will host a 3-week Artist Residency in New Glasgow. This program provides a stipend of $2000 to support the artist to work full time for 3 weeks plus a week of planning. 60% of the time will be dedicated to the artist’s own work (creation, research or both) and 40% of the time will be dedicated to community based work, including hands-on workshops, studio visits, talks and presentations. A studio space is provided in the town of New Glasgow, as well as accommodations if the artist is from outside the New Glasgow area. See more information on dates and how to apply on the PAINTS website. Deadline: July 20 at 5pm AT.

Apply for the VANS Mentorship Program

The VANS Mentorship Program’s mandate is to pair established artists with emerging artists (not necessarily young artists, but those at the beginning of their artistic careers) to take part in a ten-month long mentorship. Over the course of the program, mentors and mentees will meet one-on-one, at least once a month, and four times as a group. The program is free to mentees. Mentors are paid an honorarium.

Are you an emerging NS artist who could use some guidance in your art practice and help reaching your goals this year? Are you an established or mid-career NS artist who could provide an emerging artist with support in proposal development, grant writing assistance, technical advice, skills development, critiques of work, research assistance, and more? See more details about how to apply for the program here. Deadline: July 15 at 5pm AT.

Check out the Remote Probabilities exhibition

This year’s Mentorship Program exhibition is at The Craig Gallery!Join emerging artists Jack Wong, Andrea Tsang Jackson, Hila Peleg and Annik Gaudet and their mentors Steve Higgins, Frances Dorsey, Marilyn McAvoy, and Becka Barker in celebrating their hard work in the program this past year. The gallery has distancing measures in place including limiting opening hours and number of people in the space.

If you can’t make it to the exhibition in person, you can now take a virtual tour of the exhibition! Filmed and edited by the talented Wiebke Schroeder, the 3.5 minute video tour can be viewed on the VANS YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/sdWOLSgkR0g. See Remote Probabilities before it closes August 2.

Create or Update your Artist Page

All VANS Members are encouraged to create or update their Artist Page on the VANS website. Since the Artist Page was included in the membership fees this past year, we have had over twice as many artists set up a page, making it an even better resource to find and explore the work of Nova Scotian artists.

We have a

tutorial on creating and updating your Artist Page that makes it easier than ever, and we are happy to walk you through any steps if you run into trouble. Just log in to the VANS website (in My Account under the Members tab) to get started. It doesn’t take long, especially if you already have a short bio and artist statement (less than 15 words) and six images ready to go.You can now add all your social media handles, and a link to your website or your other media (like on Vimeo or YouTube). Learn more about the Artist Pages here.

Send us your news!

We will soon send out the Summer Edition of Members’ News (better late than never) so let us know what you have on the go this season. Any VANS member can send along their brief updates (less than 100 words, written in 3rd person) to communicate@visualarts.ns.ca with the subject line “Members’ News”. Deadline: July 20.

Remember that the VANS office is closed

HEAR TELL: A Podcasting Survey for Artists, Arts Organizations and Arts Workers in Atlantic Canada

HEAR TELL: A Podcasting Survey!

Attention Artists, Arts Workers and Arts Organizations in Atlantic Canada! Are you interested in learning about podcasting? Or do you have some experience with podcasting already? If you answered yes to either of these questions, we would like to hear from you! Participants can be entered to win a gift subscription to Visual Arts News magazine and a free webinar.

Visual Arts Nova Scotia is developing HEAR TELL, an online podcast training program that will be tailored to meet the needs of those working in the arts in Atlantic Canada. We have created a simple 10 minute questionnaire to better understand what the training needs are in our community, as well as to assess the current levels of podcasting experience and knowledge.

We are tailoring the training program specifically to the visual and media arts community but it will also be relevant to other arts groups in the Atlantic region and beyond. We would be grateful to hear from anyone in Atlantic Canada (NB, NL, NS, PE) who identifies as an artist, an arts worker or is affiliated with an arts organization.

Please complete the survey by Monday, May 18th at 11:59pm. Here’s the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/heartellpodcasting
