Artist Call – Artist in Residence (AiR) Program Opportunity

Artist Call – Artist in Residence (AiR) Program Opportunity

The Salt Spring Arts Council (SSAC) and the Artists in Residence Committee are pleased to announce the fifth year of the Artist in Residence (AiR) Program on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.

The Artist in Residence (AiR) Program provides an opportunity for artists to work in the vibrant arts environment of Salt Spring Island. As in previous years the Winter Residency is open to all Canadian and International professionals working in the arts, in any genre or medium, at any stage of their careers.

In addition, SSAC and AiR are pleased to announce the launch in 2021 of the Summer Residency. This is a new Residency aimed at providing an affordable option for visual artists under 30, who have studied in their field at a post-secondary level, and who are interested in developing a body of work as a portfolio towards future study or for exhibit. The Summer Residency is open to national and international applicants and welcomes eligible Salt Spring artists to apply.

The AiR program invites artists to engage with the creative cultural community of Salt Spring Island. Within the spirit of this framework, collaborative proposals by members of the Salt Spring arts community which involve off-island artists are actively encouraged.

The intent of the AiR program continues to be the provision of time and space for creativity and productivity and to introduce visiting artists to Salt Spring Island and its arts community. Residencies are awarded based on artistic merit, potential links to the Salt Spring community, collaborative opportunities and available facilities.

In the last four years AiR has welcomed artists living as far away as Thailand and from as near as Victoria. Our juried artists this season are Nigerian-born multidisciplinary artist, Chukwudubem Ukaigwe, Winnipeg, 2019 SSNAP winner and multi-media artist Luther Konadu, Winnipeg, author Julie Burtinshaw and ceramicist and print maker Alexandra Box McCoy, both from Vancouver. In anticipation of the new Summer Residency Tai Whelon, a multi-disciplinary Salt Spring artist and recent graduate of Concordia, was chosen by the AiR Committee as a start-up artist for this Residency intended for young professionals.

As in previous years, as well as working on their own projects, the artists will share their expertise and enthusiasm for information about these artists and events go to: All AiR events and activities are required to conform to BC health COVID guidelines in place at the time of the event.

2022 application dates for the AiR program are November 15, 2020 – March 1, 2021.
