Born in New Brunswick, I moved to Nova Scotia in 1998, settling in Wolfville. It was then that I began my career as a textile artist, moving from weaving to spinning and finally to knitting. In 2010 I began experimenting with printmaking, exploring the concept of transferring the patterns and textures of textiles to other media.
I have always had an interest in mark making on paper, and for many years envisioned using textiles to emboss paper. After seeing the work of printmaker Betty Goodwin in 2010 I was inspired to explore soft ground etchings with my knitted swatches. One of those first experiments can be seen on display at Lucky Rabbit & Co. The triptych Dutch Lace Swatch #1, a soft ground etching on copper shows the original knitted swatch, the copper plate, and the print. Through my explorations I have created a body of work that uses a variety of printmaking techniques to transfer my knitted swatches to paper. I have experimented with paper lithography, solar plate etching and combining engraving, and etching with my soft ground knitted samples. As the size of my works grew I turned to the more direct collagraph or textile relief prints that you see with Shawl #1, and the most recent large-scale print Vesna Shawl Triptych.
“In Fits and Starts” features eight recent and past textile relief and soft ground etchings printed on paper. The title aptly describes my printmaking practice over the past eleven years. Work, family and life circumstances have meant that I am a self-described constant beginner. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow within textiles and printmaking, although I do hope my compulsion for larger and larger knitted pieces calms slightly.
