Westport Schoolhouse Artist Residency

A Self-Directed Artist in Residence Program on Brier Island in Westport, Nova Scotia.
Open to emerging and established artists. The 2020 schedule includes dedicated residence times for artists living across the Maritimes and Canada. We are a non-profit volunteer organization.

May 3 – 16; May 17 – 30; May 31 – June 13; June 14 – 27; June 28 – July 11; July 12 – 25; July 26 – August 8; August 9 – 22; August 23 – September 5; September 6 – 19; September 20 – October 3; October 4 – 17

APPLICATION DEADLINE (by wetransfer): midnight on February 29, 2020

RESIDENCY FEE: $500.00 (for 13 nights)
Applicant may invite a companion to stay with them at no extra cost. Studio A has a full wall of south facing windows. Studio B has a full wall of north-facing windows. Each private studio accommodation is in a 750-square foot live-in classroom that includes two twin beds, a couch, chairs, and several tables. Shared space includes equipped kitchen, bathroom, entryway. Limited laundry access.

NOT INCLUDED IN THE RESIDENCY: travel expenses, food, insurance, art materials, shipping costs and other personal expenses. Note no internet – wifi is available at the local library.

Westport Schoolhouse Amenities:
A volunteer-based residency run by the townspeople and artists from away.
Studio Dimensions 25’ x 20’ with a full wall of windows (Studio A faces south; Studio B faces North)
Studio includes two twin beds, couch chairs and several large tables
Bathroom with shower located downstairs in the basement
Shared fully equipped kitchen space – no personal hygiene
Laundry facilities one time each stay (extra laundry at $5 per load)
No internet access! Wii-fi available at the library down the street
Hammer and Sky Studios: located around the corner from the Schoolhouse

Bicycle access – to be booked in advance
Westport Town Amenities:

Whale watching centers with gift shop

Natural features:
Birding – on a main migratory path excellent in May and September
Whale and seal watching from shore or through two local tour operators
Natural beach (very cold water – 4℃ !)
Multiple hiking trails all over the island and along the shoreline

Getting to Brier Island:

Flying: Fly to Halifax, NS and take a shuttle transport to Brier Island.
