Reminders from VANS…ViR deadline, send us your news, renew your membership, holiday office closure

Remember the VANS office closure!

Send us your news!

We will soon send out the Winter Edition of Members’ News…but it will be empty unless you send us your updates. Have you been involved in a cool project? Taken part in a residency? Taught a great workshop or had an exhibition? Let your peers know! We can tell you that they actually want to know your news, as Members’ News is the most read email we send out. Any VANS member can send along their brief updates (less than 100 words, written in 3rd person) to communicate@visualarts.ns.ca with the subject line “Members’ News”. Deadline: Friday, December 13.

Apply for VANS in Residence!

This 4-week residency at the DesBrisay Museum in Bridgewater provides artists with a studio in the museum, a stipend of $2500, and accommodation (if the artist is from outside the area). The artist must be willing and able to commit 40 hours per week to the 4-week residency and to the 1 week of planning, and dedicate 30% of the time to community based work. The residency must take place between February 17 and March 30, 2020. Deadline: December 20.

Renew your VANS membership today!

VANS membership gives you access to various VANS programs, information, opportunities, a subscription to Visual Arts News magazine, an Artist Page on our website, a large provincial community of colleagues and peer networks, and more. Whatever the reason you were a member in 2019, we hope you will renew your membership for 2020. There are membership changes this year, including the option to have your membership auto-renew, an Artist Page included with every membership, and rates that will increase on January 6, 2020. So if you haven’t renewed yet (since October) remember to renew your membership before it expires! All 2019 memberships expire: December 31.

Register for the Artist Residencies workshop!

We had to reschedule this workshop due to a storm, so there is still time to register! Artist Residencies with Eryn Foster will be an introduction to the concept and reality of residencies, exploring what they are about and why might artists participate. It will cover the different kinds of residencies, the pros and cons of getting paid for vs paying for a residency, and how to find the ones that are appropriate to your practice. The workshop will take place Thursday, December 19, 6 – 9pm at the Lunenburg School for the Arts. Registration deadline: December 19 at 5pm.

Consider making a donation to VANS!

Without the generosity of its many supporters, VANS could not offer such a wide range of programs and services. Registered as a charitable organization, all donations made to VANS over $20 are tax deductible and will receive a charitable tax receipt. You can make a General Donation or select an option that resonates with you such as the VANS Artist Emergency Fund, VANS Programming, the PAINTS program, or donate the cost of a membership to an artist in need. You can click here to donate online. Thanks so much!

Take a look at the new Membership Bursaries!

We understand that membership fees can be prohibitive for some artists, so we are introducing bursaries for fully funded memberships for artists in need. If you want to apply for one of these 12 bursaries, you can learn more and apply here. Show your support by donating to membership bursaries to help provide a free membership to artists, beyond the 12 fully funded by VANS. Deadline to apply for a 2020 Membership Bursary: January 6.

Remember the VANS office closure!

Along with the rest of the Cultural Federations, the VANS office will be closed for the holidays December 19 – January 1. Our last day in the office will be Wednesday, December 18 (so get your membership renewals in before then) and our first day back will be Thursday, January 2, 2020. Happy holidays from the team at VANS (Becky, Andrea and Carri)!
