The Convent – Call for Studio Applications

The Convent – Cape Breton’s newest arts centre – has just launched a second public call for studio space applications.

The Convent is a 36,000 square foot arts centre on George Street in the North End of Sydney focused on the provision of affordable work spaces for artists. Prior to its adaptive reuse into an arts centre, the building was used by the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame for 130 years. When it reopens in February 2020, it will offer private studios for both visual artists and musicians and a bright, open, 4,000 square foot shared studio for visual artists, designers, authors, illustrators, etc. After a successful first call for applications that took place in the summer, there are still a few studio spaces available.

The Convent has a very small number of private studios still available. These studios begin at $270/month (for 140-170 square feet), can be shared by more than one artist, can be used to both work and sell, and the price includes all utilities, Internet, and taxes.

Private Studio

The Convent’s shared studio has 22 spaces for artists and these spaces are split into two different work areas (1) work desks (of which several remain available) that cost $95/month (including all utilities, Internet, and taxes) and (2) semi-private workspaces in the shared studio (of which there are a limited number remaining) beginning at $135/month (again, everything included).

Shared Studio Space

In addition to studio spaces, The Convent will also offer a café and commercial kitchen, 40-person event/exhibition space, 100-person event/exhibition space, 12-person meeting space, small tenant gallery, and is home to four larger arts anchor tenants.

This call for applications for studio space opened on October 21st and closes on November 22nd. Applications will be reviewed by an anonymous Tenant Selection Committee at the end of November, and selected applicants will be notified in December. Expected move-in for artist tenants is in early February 2020.
