Studio Lab Gallery is very pleased to present LIMITATIONS, an exhibition of works of sculpture by Dawn MacNutt from May 2nd 2019 to June 15th 2019. The opening reception will be Saturday May 4th from 7 – 10 pm, coinciding with New Glasgow’s Art At Night. On Saturday the 18th of May at 2 pm, the artist will host a talk to speak on her work. The gallery and all events are free to attend and welcome to all.
It is a distinct privilege to show in this newly reopened gem of a gallery space. Ken and Susan have transformed the space with skillful lighting and professional placement of the work so that it has the feel of a Parisian boutique gallery… right here in downtown New Glasgow! They have taken the space which Andy Cunningham bravely began (as Eventide Gallery), and gone forward. With an informed art practice of their own, Susan and Ken bring energy and dedication to the selection and installation of the work, taking care to give each piece a profile of its own. The generous lighting in the space creates the extra dimension of shadows that enhances the viewing experience of sculpture.
I’ve enjoyed the process of dialogue regarding which pieces to show for this exhibition. The selection of work shown reflects three opinions, and an interesting dialogue about what should stay in and which needs to be eliminated… usually because of the limitations of space.
Limitations of space doesn’t need to be a bad thing. Editing out some favoured works is a necessary part of the creative experience. Knowing when to stop… when enough is too much. Space around a work allows for personal reflection by the viewer, just as listening is an important dynamic of conversation.
