Abstract art is not “about nothing”. At its core, it is about form, colour, line, texture, pattern, composition and process. These are the formal qualities of our abstract art, because they describe what the art looks like and how it is created. Our art is an exploration of these formal qualities.

The meaning for the viewer is derived from how these formal qualities are used to create a visual (and/or visceral, cerebral, emotional, etc.) experience.

Come to the Halifax Art Map CROSSROADS Exhibition

The Crossroads exhibition theme evokes many meanings and images. Crossroads are places where two or more roads meet; byroads. Often crossroads become the centre of a community where people congregate. Halifax is a land and sea ‘crossroad’. Crossroads may also be a critical juncture, turning point, or crisis when some important decision or choice must be made. Furthermore, folklore and mythology see crossroads as a place between two worlds or where spirits gather.

In this, Halifax Art Map’s seventeenth (17th) year of publication, we challenged participating artists to explore, consider and respond to the theme Crossroads; an intersection in time, across the pantheon of their experiences and artistic styles.

The viewer is invited to contemplate the works presented in this exhibition in mediums ranging from water colour, acrylic, oils, photography, pottery and steel. We hope you will be entertained and challenged by them. Do you walk or face similar crossroads?
