Gallery 18 in New London is planning a special reception in August. Friends of the late island artist Thérèse D’Amour are being invited to gather on Sunday, the 20th, when Gallery 18 will be marking D’Amour’s birthday. The event coincides with Gallery 18’s ongoing exhibition and sale of works from the artist’s estate titled Thérèse D’Amour – A Passion for Nature.
Thérèse was born on August 20, 1921, in Matapedia, Quebec. Her life was a long and passionate adventure. In her early fifties, she took on the challenge of new academic studies and earned both a B.Sc. and a Masters degree in Bioengineering. She travelled extensively, climbing volcanoes and pyramids, swimming with sharks and patting a wild leopard, among other exciting exploits. Her passions were nurturing the people she loved, the beauty of nature and animals, and expressing those passions through her art.
From an early age she also maintained a passion for art. Writing in 1992, Thérèse said as a child her “favorite game was drawing.” In primary and secondary schools she received “an introduction to the use of charcoal, pastel, watercolor and oil.” Although mainly self-taught, she would later attend workshops with artists including Molly Lamb Bobak.
Thérèse was a studio painter best known for landscapes. Thérèse died in O’Leary, P.E.I., on December 23, 2013. She was 92 The August 20th event at Gallery 18 will begin at 2:00 pm. Admission is free.
