GREAT WOMEN OF STEM ART EXHIBIT

Friday, June 16 – 30th 2017 Halifax, Nova Scotia

HALIFAX, June, 2017– Want to inspire young women to pursue educational paths in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)? Raise awareness about female innovators and their amazing accomplishments? Or just get to know a few great women who carved powerful paths in STEM-related fields?

If so, you may want to view a new art exhibit at the Public Archives gallery later this month in Halifax.

Women of the Ocean, Earth and Sky, officially opens Friday June 16th 7-9 pm at the Chase Gallery in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia. The show- part of the ongoing Great Women of STEM contemporary portrait series being created by Halifax artist/author Jo Napier, runs for the last two weeks of June in the Archives’ Chase Gallery, located at the corner of University & Robie.

Napier’s first foray into STEM-related research and portraiture was Great Women of STEM: Female Chemistry – a 2016 show that struck a powerful chord, says Napier.

Her 2017 show focuses again on historic female “greats” –innovators in oceanography, astronomy, physics, and cartography like Annie Jump Cannon (who classified the first 400,000 stars), Elisabeth Mann Borgese (international oceans activist/advocate), Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (who discovered what stars are made of) and Marie Tharp (who co-mapped the ocean floor).

“I keep uncovering amazing stories about amazing women in these STEM-related fields. I want their lives and faces and work to inspire young women to carve their own, powerful paths.”

Napier’s first portrait series The Nova Scotia Nine: Great Women of Nova Scotia was acquired for the RBC National Art Collection, and inspired the book produced by the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women. Her book Technology With Curves: Women Reshaping the Digital Landscape profiled female technology greats and was published by Harper Collins.
