We are thrilled for our May artists in The Craig Gallery this year! We’re featuring TWO phenomenal artists, the well-known local Folk Artist, Barry Colpitts brings his surreal, magical, whimsical whirligigs to our Main Gallery with “WITH GUST-O!”.
“There is something very interesting and nice about having art outside, moving with the wind almost like it’s alive.”
Barry has been carving since the late 80s and has been a recent recipient of several grants and featured in CBC’s Land and Sea and Life magazine’s Weird Homes. This will be his 3rd show at The Craig Gallery and we’re so thrilled to have him back!
In our Extension, Ruth Marsh will be returning with her BEE sculptures and animation work with her show IDEAL BOUNDS.
Ruth Marsh has been creating a multi-disciplinary, community engaged series of works which focuses on bee extinction since 2011. Contributions of found, dead bees are mailed to her Halifax studio from individuals across Canada. The bees are taxidermically preserved and then meticulously repaired using discarded technology. The newly restored bees are then given life, frame-by- frame, through the process of stop motion animation.
Ruth Marsh is a multidisciplinary artist based out of Halifax, NS. Her work uses absurd and often comically deadpan narratives to address loss, absence and longing in the context of living creatures and the natural world. She is interested in investigating themes of environmental loss through labour intensive meditations on transformation: life to death, experience to memory and the surrealistic degradation of information that occurs with each successive change of state.
This month will certainly be filled with colourful, engaging artwork – not to be missed!!
