Chester Art Center Classes for August 2016

Chester Art Centre

We have a great line-up of summer classes and workshops at our newly renovated home at 60 Queen St.

Create your own Jewelry and/or Small Scale Sculpture with Allyson Simmie on August 15 & 16 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. with an Intro to the Art of Lost Wax Casting. You will be introduced to the basic principals of the lost wax casting technique. In three sessions you will be carving in jewelers wax your own unique creation (ring, pendant, earrings or small scale sculpture). Each piece will then be sent to Montreal to be cast. Approximately two weeks later we will reconvene at Allyson’s studio in Blandford for the final session of finishing in metal. As each piece is priced by weight- (bronze 15 cents/gram, sterling silver 90 cents/gram) every person’s material cost will vary according to the weight of the final piece. $115.00 includes a basic charge for all other materials (wax, saw blades, sandpaper, polishing buffs, masks, etc.).

Draw What You See! with Cherie MacLeod on August 17 &18 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. This is a drawing class for beginners. We will explore methods of drawing through a series of non-intimidating challenges designed to open you to observing and drawing what you see. Topics will include line and mark making, tone and form and a brief introduction to composition and perspective. Cost: $70.00 all materials supplied.

Find the Character within at Portrait Painting with Dawn Harwood Jones on August 24 & 25 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. It is an art to be able to find the character inside a person simply by looking at his or her face, but it is a fun art to master. This class will cover the three things you have to work on when painting portraits: understanding skin colour (which is many many colours), where the sparkle lies and how to bring you’re two-dimensional painting alive. Harwood-Jones has been painting portraits since the 1970s. She studied under one of Canada’s most recognized portrait painters, Robert Hyndman – a war artist who was once commissioned to paint Queen Elizabeth II. The cost is $140.00 and a material list will be supplied. Bring a lunch.
