The Lunenburg Art Gallery will be showcasing “Two Guys and Their Palettes”. A show of various media by Vaughan Renzo and Rae Smith. Their Opening Reception will take place on Tuesday, May 24th at 5pm. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend. This exhibition will be available from May 24th to June 19th.
Vaughan was born and raised in New Brunswick and educated in Montreal.
After a career in Education in Toronto, he retired to Nova Scotia. Vaughan dabbled in oils over the years but began to take lessons in acrylic as a retirement project, taking courses with artists such as j’anna jacqulyn, at the Lincoln Street Gallery in Lunenburg, Liz Porter in Savannah, Georgia, locally with Andrew Sherman, Connie Claus, and most recently, with David Lacey and Brian Atyeo.
Vaughan has always been intrigued with colour, shape, light and shadow. The beauty of Nova Scotia constantly inspires him as an artist to recreate its beauty on canvas.
Rae Smith – Pastel Artist (PAC) – www.pastelartists.ca
Rae was born in Halifax before World War II. His mother bought water colours when he had mumps at approximately 12 years old. She enrolled him in the College of Art, and on Saturday mornings he attended life drawing classes.
In his 30’s he met David Whitzman – a pastel artist. David had an art gallery on Quinpool Road in Halifax. David became a very good mentor, and Rae learned much from him.
In the 70’s Rae painted with the group AAAA (Atlantic Area Artists Association), serving as their President for 7 years. The group had yearly exhibitions, many taking place at NS Art Gallery, and at that time, was located on Coburg Road in Halifax.
Rae began exhibiting in galleries, Art and Jewels, on Gottingen Street in Halifax, then joined Swoon Gallery in Hammonds Plains for 5 years. He had yearly exhibitions there and sold many paintings. He currently exhibits at Amicus Gallery in Chester, Amber Rose Gallery in Mahone Bay and the Lunenburg Art Gallery, as well as Crouchers Point Gallery.
In 2015, when Art Zone, a new gallery, opened on Barrington Street, Halifax, Rae had a show there for the month of June that same year.
Last February, Pastel Artist named Rae as Pastel Artist of the month, representing Canada. He is currently a member of this organization and in December 2015, Rae was appointed as a Signature Member. Rae is also a member of Visual Arts Nova Scotia. He also belongs to a Plein Air painting group that meets one day a week to paint.
Two years ago, the Chester Yacht Club chose one of Rae’s paintings for their Race Week poster and that same painting sold for $900. that helped to fund the Junior Sailing Program.
